South Jersey Websites Blog

What is Responsive Web Design, and Why You Need It

responsiveOver the years, website design has changed. When South Jersey Websites first started over ten years ago, computer monitors were small, so web designs were kind of narrow. The standard monitor resolution was 640 by 480.

Web designs got wider because monitors got bigger. But now a web designer needs to start thinking small again. These days, more and more people are accessing websites from mobile, portable devices.

Today a website is viewed from a smart phone or a tablet with a smaller screen. One way to deal with different screen sizes is to have two designs for a website: one for the computer and one for mobile. But that solution can be more expensive, because your designer needs to come up with two designs, so they would need to charge more. Also, two designs won’t cover all size devices, since tablets come in different sizes.

Now the trend is towards something called Responsive Web Design, (RWD). Wikipedia defines Responsive Web Design as a web design approach aimed at crafting sites to provide an optimal viewing experience—easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling—across a wide range of devices (from desktop computer monitors to mobile phones). Simply put, it’s one website designed created to adapt, or respond, to the device used to view it.

We won’t bore you with all of the technical stuff that goes into making a website responsive, the important part is that a responsive website will effectively reach an audience regardless of the device used. Considering that more and more people are  viewing websites on mobile devices rather than on desktop computers, you really should start thinking responsive.

It goes without saying that if your website isn’t responsive, your site will look out of date, and be difficult to use on mobile devices. More and more responsive websites are popping up, and more will be expected.  South Jersey Websites now only creates responsive web designs.

We’ve recently redesigned sites for longtime clients like: Hair Event in Haddonfield, JDL Concrete of Audubon, and Swim-Mor Pools of Haddon Heights, to be responsive. Your website can and should be responsive too.

Of course our website: southjerseywebsites.com is responsive. To view the responsive properties, just resize your browser window so it’s smaller. You’ll see the whole page resize to fit, the columns will move under each other, and even the menu changes to be smaller, all to fit in the smaller window. That way, you’ll never have to scroll side to side, or need to zoom in just to read the text.

A responsive website is perfect for your potential customers who find your website and want to call you right away. With a responsive site, they just touch the phone number on your site, and they’re on the phone with you right away. If your business website isn’t responsive, contact us, and we’ll create a responsive website for you.

Why You Need A Professional Email Address

A free email address just doesn’t cut it.

Lots of people use free email addresses. We all have friends that have Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail and even AOL email addresses. If you use an internet provider like Verizon or Comcast, you may have an email account there.

While this kind of email address is OK for personal use, it really doesn’t look professional if you use it for your business. Gmail or Yahoo mail accounts or email accounts with your internet provider are convenient when emailing friends or family, but you have to think about the impression you’re giving if you’re running a business.

A business should already have a domain name as well as a website. If you have those things, then having a professional email address is pretty easy. Most web hosts offer email hosting in addition to hosting your website. So, here at South Jersey Websites, all of our email addresses are in the format, name@southjerseywebsites.com, or name@sjwebsites.com. (We use sjwebsites.com for email since it’s shorter, and easier to remember and type than the longer domain name.

Using your domain name in your email address helps to reinforce your brand, tells people about your website, and just looks more professional than if our email address were sjwebsites@aol.com.

Of course people tend to stick with what they’re familiar with, so if you use a free email address, you may want to continue using it for your  business. But that would be a mistake.

If you have always used an AOL email address, and continue to use it for your business, you may be viewed as unwilling to update to modern ways, or just plain obsolete. You may be viewed as someone unable to keep up with technology.

With this kind of email address, you give the impression that you don’t really take your business seriously. This may be a false impression, but remember, first impressions are very important, and an email from you may be the first impression you give.

Having a hosted email account is easy and inexpensive. If you already have a domain name and a website, you should be able to have email addresses on that hosting account. If you don’t already have a domain name and a website, you can still purchase a domain name and a hosting package just for email use. (Although, we recommend having a website too obviously.)

There really is no good reason not to have a professional email address that brands your business and makes you look like a pro.

SEO for Blogs – Internet Marketing 101

Author: Kevin Crawley

Blog Design and Theme

This is your chance to make a great first impression.
Personally, I’m a fan of WordPress. However, no matter the blog publisher or website host…NEVER go with just the standard/default template that is available. Search for templates and themes that are “clean” and fresh looking. If you are using a lot of pictures and videos, you may want a theme that is darker in presentation. Lots of text and information, lighter colored themes seem to work best.

Keyword Selection

We could really spend all day talking about this topic, but for the sake of the article we’ll keep it short. Effective keyword usage is your way of telling the search engines what information your website contains. If you are marketing a dog training course, your blog/site should be peppered with the phrase “dog training” through the site. Never, EVER…do keyword stuffing (using the same phrase over and over) it is a quick way to get your website sent to the bottom of the pack.

META-TAG Optimization

In all honesty, there are some people that say this is unnecessary. My opinion is that every little bit helps. Plus, for the most part, once you do this you rarely, if ever, need to go back and update it. This is the area that you can put your top 10-20 keyword phrases. Additionally, use a MetaTag description that is a 4-6 sentence description of your website.
Make sure you place several of your keywords in this description.

Link using Keywords

No website should be an island to itself. No links in or out is a surefire way to make sure you don’t get any search engine traffic. Whether you are linking to or from your site, use one of your relevant keywords as the anchor text. Simply using “Click Here” does very little for your SEO and internet marketing.

Link within your blog/site

As you create more articles and post more content, its safe to say that you will discuss the same or similar information in different postings. Link to other articles and postings within your blog. Give the search engines every piece of help in indexing your site.

Good Permalink Structure

Again, using every opportunity to get our keywords involved in our internet marketing…make sure that you are using good permalink structure. What’s a permalink? The URL for this post as it appears on my site is http://kevincrawley.com/2010/02/27/seo-for-blogs-internet-marketi
ng-101 With this URL, my keywords “internet marketing” is getting another opportunity to shine. Had I not made the change, my URL by default would have been something like
www.kevincrawley.com/?p=5

Get a Domain Name

If you are on a budget…fine, get the free option of a blogger.com or wordpress.com site. However, if you really want to make some headway with any type of marketing strategy for the internet, invest the few dollars and get a domain name. There are several hosting companies out there. My personal preference is Global Domains International. I’m an affiliate and it allows me to build an income by sharing the service which makes my hosting FREE!

These are just a few steps that you should take if you want to improve you search engine optimization. No, you will not jump to the top of Google rankings on day one, but consistent effort and actions will bring you results that will pay off.
