Also, having links back to your site, as you would in Twitter and Facebook, help with search engine ranking.

A WordPress Tutorial

Wordpress has become one of the most popular content management systems around. While it started primarily as blogging software, it has grown into full content management.

Many websites created by South Jersey Websites use WordPress, including our own.

This Wordpress tutorial will give you some basic instruction on how to add pages and blog posts.

Once you have WordPress installed on your server, login to your admin area. The url for login is usually something like: yourwordpress.com/wp-admin. Put in your user name and password.

Once logged in, you’ll see your dashboard. There are links on the left side. Find the link that says, “Posts”. If you mouseover this link, you’ll see more menu options. You can also click this link. The options you’ll see are, All Posts – a link that shows all of your existing posts, Add New – the link to add a new post, Categories – a link to add new categories, and Tags – here you can add tags that represent what your posts are about. For this tutorial, we’re not going to be using tags.

Click the Categories link and fill out the name and description of your categories. You can name your categories anything you like.

Adding a New WordPress Blog Post

To add a new blog post, click the “Add New” link, under Posts. You’ll see two fields; one for the title and one for the article itself. Just fill those in. Above the larger text field, you’ll see symbols that are similar to what you see in Word or similar program. These buttons do the same thing as they would in Word. For example, clicking the “B” button will bold your text, clicking the “I” button will make it italicized. You can also make ordered or unordered lists, and justify right, left or center. The icon that looks like a chain link allows you to create a link to another page or site. If you’re adding a link to a site make sure you add the http:// part to the link, for example, use http://wpebsites.com, instead of just sjwebsites.com.

Now just type your article into the bottom text field. Remember the title goes in the top field.

If you’d like to add images, click the button that says, “Upload/Insert”. You’ll see a window pop up that will allow you to browse to images on your computer. Just press the browse button, find the image you want to upload, and press the Upload button. After it’s uploaded, you can resize the image by choosing a percentage of the original size. There are buttons that allow you to choose if it will be left, right or center justified. You can add a link and a caption to the image as well. When you’re finished editing the image, click “Insert into Post”. You can always go back and edit the image, and add more images if you want.

You can preview your post before publishing it by pressing the Preview button. You can save it as a draft if you need to come back to it later to finish it. Choose a category from the available categories by checking off the category you want to put it in.

Once you’re ready, you can publish your post by pressing the Publish button.

Adding a New WordPress Page

Adding a page works the same way as adding a blog post. Just click the Pages link, then click, “Add New”. Put the page title in the top field and the content in the bottom field. Add images by clicking, “Upload/Insert”. When you’re finished, click the Publish button. Just like posts, pages can be previewed before making them live.

Publishing the new page should add a page link to your navigation.

If you need to edit a page, just click the All Pages link, click on the Edit Page link near the page you want to edit, (you’ll need to mouseover the page name to see the link), then just edit your page.

In no time at all, you’ll be blogging like a pro with WordPress.

South Jersey Websites is creating a new website for a local business that caters to the golfer.

Scott Wright Enterprises, has created the Stick-N-Pick Golf Club Carrier. The device is meant to be stuck into the ground, and hold up to four clubs, safely. Your clubs won’t get wet or dirty by laying them on the ground.

Scott Wright manufactures the devices, and will promote and sell them on their eCommerce website.

Happy Birthday – South Jersey Websites

It’s sort of our Birthday. Eleven years ago yesterday, March 30, 2003, we registered the domain name, southjerseywebsites.com. Since then, we created the first website on that domain name, and have designed countless websites for local South Jersey Businesses.

There have been six or seven versions of our website over those years. I guess if you’re a web designer, you constantly want to improve your own website.

We’d like to thank our many clients for staying with us over the years, and to thank our new clients too.

Our clients are what helps keep South Jersey Websites going strong for eleven years.

JDL Concrete Getting New Website Design

South Jersey Websites created the first website for JDL Concrete about six or seven years ago. They’ve continued to be a loyal client of ours ever since. We’ve hosted and maintained the site for JDL Concrete since the beginning.

But since the site has been designed so long ago, it’s become outdated looking. So, South Jersey Websites is now re-designing the site for them.

South Jersey Websites has already started the design process on a new and better website for JDL Concrete. The new site will be responsive and created in WordPress. It will continue to show off the company’s work in a photo gallery.

JDL Concrete has been serving the Southern New Jersey area with quality concrete, masonry and pavers for more than 30 years. They provide services in Camden County, Gloucester County and Cape May County.

We’re proud to have JDL as a long time client and look forward to continuing to work with them on a brand new website.
