What is Responsive Web Design, and Why You Need It

responsiveOver the years, website design has changed. When South Jersey Websites first started over ten years ago, computer monitors were small, so web designs were kind of narrow. The standard monitor resolution was 640 by 480.

Web designs got wider because monitors got bigger. But now a web designer needs to start thinking small again. These days, more and more people are accessing websites from mobile, portable devices.

Today a website is viewed from a smart phone or a tablet with a smaller screen. One way to deal with different screen sizes is to have two designs for a website: one for the computer and one for mobile. But that solution can be more expensive, because your designer needs to come up with two designs, so they would need to charge more. Also, two designs won’t cover all size devices, since tablets come in different sizes.

Now the trend is towards something called Responsive Web Design, (RWD). Wikipedia defines Responsive Web Design as a web design approach aimed at crafting sites to provide an optimal viewing experience—easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling—across a wide range of devices (from desktop computer monitors to mobile phones). Simply put, it’s one website designed created to adapt, or respond, to the device used to view it.

We won’t bore you with all of the technical stuff that goes into making a website responsive, the important part is that a responsive website will effectively reach an audience regardless of the device used. Considering that more and more people are  viewing websites on mobile devices rather than on desktop computers, you really should start thinking responsive.

It goes without saying that if your website isn’t responsive, your site will look out of date, and be difficult to use on mobile devices. More and more responsive websites are popping up, and more will be expected.  South Jersey Websites now only creates responsive web designs.

We’ve recently redesigned sites for longtime clients like: Hair Event in Haddonfield, JDL Concrete of Audubon, and Swim-Mor Pools of Haddon Heights, to be responsive. Your website can and should be responsive too.

Of course our website: southjerseywebsites.com is responsive. To view the responsive properties, just resize your browser window so it’s smaller. You’ll see the whole page resize to fit, the columns will move under each other, and even the menu changes to be smaller, all to fit in the smaller window. That way, you’ll never have to scroll side to side, or need to zoom in just to read the text.

A responsive website is perfect for your potential customers who find your website and want to call you right away. With a responsive site, they just touch the phone number on your site, and they’re on the phone with you right away. If your business website isn’t responsive, contact us, and we’ll create a responsive website for you.
